News about Insurance Coverage for Autism Services in California

Brown Signs Autism Treatment Bill

On Sunday, Brown signed into law a bill (SB 946), by Senate President Pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), that requires insurers to cover beginning in July 2012 an autism treatment called applied behavioral analysis (Buchanan, San Francisco Chronicle, 10/10).

The mandate will last until 2014, when the provision could be included as an essential health benefit under the federal health reform law (York, "PolitiCal," Los Angeles Times, 10/9).

The mandate does not apply to Medi-Cal, California's Medicaid program, or Healthy Families, California's Children's Health Insurance Program.

News about Insurance Coverage for Autism Services across the US

On June 22nd 2011 Congress introduced the "Caring for Military Kids with Autism Act". This Bill will help military families access and fund ABA Services throughout the US. Let's hope it passes!

Take a look at the listing of House Armed Services Committee members and see if one represents you. If they do, your contribution of sending a note of support can go a long way in having this bill move forward. If you know people represented by any of the members, you can ask them to send a note as well. These messages to congressional offices do not cost anything, but a small amount of personal time to volunteer and make a difference.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) – Addressing Some Common Misconceptions

By Dr. Tyra Sellers, BCBA-D

Based on data collected in 2006, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) conservatively estimates that approximately 1 in 110 children have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). With so many children affected with ASD a wide variety of therapies have emerged. Currently, therapy using the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is recognized as an effective and evidence-based treatment for individuals with autism.

In fact, the United States Surgeon General (1999) stated,“Thirty years of research demonstrated the efficacy of applied behavioral methods in reducing inappropriate behavior and in increasing communication, learning, and appropriate social behavior” (iv). Unfortunately, many myths and misconceptions about ABA abound.
